The year 2022 will bring another exciting year challenging for the Canadian wine industry. A challenge that our winemakers will meet. They will achieve new and exciting heights in quality wine production. These are the wineries we believe will lead the way in 2022.

Western Canada will include the provinces of British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

Alderlea Vineyards

 Zac and Julie Brown took over Alderlea Vineyards in April 2017. The winery is located near Duncan on the slopes above Quamichan Lake. Their hard work and passion has result in success!

Double good at the All Canadians for their Pinot Gris and White Vitis Vinifera Blend Valeri enticing blend of 80% Cowichan Valley Ortega and 20% Alderlea Viognier. These were not the only medals the winery won in 2021 We know 2022 will also be their year!

Arrowleaf Cellars is a family owned and operated winery located in beautiful Lake Country, BC. Winemaker Manuel Zuppiger "plays" with blending various grape varieties to create textural richness and layered flavours.

A serious and passionate owner. For Mohan Gill and his family, the opening of Bordertown Vineyards and Estate Winery in May 2015 was the culmination of a lifetime dream.  

Bordertown won four medals at the  National Wine Awards of Canada. The Lieutenant Governor's Award of Excellence for their Living Desert Red.

Chaberton Estate Winery

Do you know another winery that keeps enlarging their packing lot. Chaberton is a very popular winery with a very busy tasting room.

They make some excellent wines. Ortega and Bacchus among my favourits. The Siegerrebe is also very good.

Chain Reaction Winery

The dream of Linda and Joel Chamaschuk began in 2018 when they converted an apple orchard into vineyard. They grow Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc. 

This new winery surprised everyone by winning  Platinum at The British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Wine Awards for their 2019 Tailwind Pinot Gris.

They have two locations. The one in Victoria is the original location. They opened a second location in Oliver where most of the wines are made.

This past year I had the opportunity to taste numerous wines from Church and State. They have a very impressive cellar of wines. More than good enough reason to keep your eye on them in 2022.


Coolshanagh Vineyards

Skip and Judy Stothert relocated to Naramata in 2003 with a dream to start their own vineyard and a vision to plant only those varietals perfectly aligned with the soil profile of their land.

According to world renowned terroir specialist Dr. Pedro Parra, the Coolshanagh Vineyard offers some of the best exposure and soil structures for grape growing he had seen in the Okanagan, among the top 15% in the world. Thus the strong expectations for Coolshanagh to do well in 2022

A small artisan winery and vineyard on the South Similkameen Valley Upper Bench. They just keep producing top quality wines. Clos du Soleil recently purchased Whispered Secret Vineyard in the Similkameen Valley, BC, has been granted organic certification

Dark Horse Vineyards

Keep an eye on this Golden Mile Bench vineyard owned by Arterra Canada

Their   Red Meritage  awarded best Red Wine at the all Canadians.

The winemaker is Derek Kontkanen, keep an eye on him.

In 1997, Kontkanen moved to St. Catharines to complete an Honours Bachelor of Science degree at the Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute at Brock University. Spending his summers working as a vineyard assistant at Inniskillin’s Niagara Estate Winery, he then deciding to undertake graduate studies in this field, where he focused on Icewine fermentation. Kontkanen’s work has been published in scientific papers and earned him the Dessert Wine Trophy at the International Wine and Spirits competition three out of the past 10 years. Kontkanen was awarded an Alumni of Distinction a

The winery is owned by Bryan and Debra Hardman. The family has been farming the land around our winery for 100 years, spanning four generations. After many years of selling grapes to other wineries, they took the leap into winemaking, producing their first vintage in 2012, which was followed by opening the tasting room doors in 2014.

One of the wineries helping to put Vancouver Island on the world map. Winner of The British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Wine Awards for their Tempest Ortega in 2015. In 2020 they won 12 medals at various award shows.

In 2021 – 2020 Shining Armour Pinot Gris won a British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Wine Awards

They started in 2009 owned by the Smith Family.

Forbidden Fruit Winery is a family owned and operated certified organic boutique winery located on Ven’Amour Organic Farms, a certified organic tree fruit farm, vineyard and nature estate along the banks of the pristine Similkameen River in Cawston, British Columbia, Canada. The winery produces small lots of premium award winning tree fruit wines and grape wines from Similkameen and Okanagan fruit.

The  2020 Flaunt Organic Sparkling Plum names best Fruit wine at the 2021 All Canadian Championships. Forbidden Fruits just keeps on producing top quality wines.

Kalala Organic Vineyards

Founder and President Karnail Singh Sidhu left his native India in 1993 with an Electrical Engineering degree and 25 years of experience in agriculture. Upon his arrival in Canada, Karnail moved to the pristine Okanagan Valley and started a family. He learned his trade at Summer Hill Pyramid Winery developing organic techniques. The winery overlooks the lake, opening 5th of July 2008. The vineyards were deemed certified organic in September 2010.

Kalala Organic Estate Winery won top spot in the Chardonnay du Monde competition in 2016 for its 2013 Chardonnay Icewine

In 2020, the B.C. Grape Growers’ Association presented its inaugural Viticulturist of the Year award to Karnail.


Kismet Estate Winery

The winery is owned by Balwinder Dhaliwal and Sukhwinder Dhaliwal. The business started over twenty years ago growing grapes for others before deciding to produce their own wines. they have vineyard locations starting from North of Oliver to the south of Osoyoos. Each vineyard location has been chosen extensively and carefully to produce the best quality of grapes.
In total they have 200 acres producing 1200 cases

They received a  Platinum Award  at the British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Wine Awards for their 2018 Cabernet Franc Reserve

Liquidity Wines

When you ask people about their favourite BC wines Maverick is always mentioned. The winery is doing exceeding well under winemaker Andrew Windsor, .

They received a Platinum medal & 94 points for their 2019 Bush Vine Syrah at the 2021 National Wine Awards of Canada. They also gather 2 Gold, 3 Silver, 2 Bronze.


Meyer Family Vineyards

Meyer Family Vineyards has been crafting premium wines in the Okanagan Valley since 2006 and in 2010 they opened a tasting room in Okanagan Falls.

The Meyer Family Vineyards they were awarded Gold for their Micro Cuvée Old Main Road Vineyard Chardonnay at Decanter worlds. They also pick up a number of medals at the National Wine Awards.

Make sure you keep your eye on them in 2022.


Mission Hill Family Estate

This Kelowna iconic winery won two  Platinum Award British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Wine Awards for 2019 Terroir Collection Vista’s Edge Cabernet Franc and 2019 Perpetua.

They were also received medals at the all Canadian Championship with a double gold for their 2019 Terroir Collection Chardonnay They also won Gold at Decanter Worlds.


Monte Creek Estate Winery

Voted Kamloops best winery.

The Monte Creek and Lion’s Head vineyards primarily grow five Minnesota hybrids plus Maréchal Foch, a French hybrid. If the winery chooses to release the wines under varietal names, look for reds called Frontenac and Marquette, a rosé variety called Frontenac Gris and whites called Frontenac Blanc and La Crescent.

Their 2020 Living Land Sparkling double gold as did 2019   Ancient Waters Chardonnay at the All Canadian .


Moon Curser Vineyards

Originally launched as Twisted Tree by Chris and Beata Tolley. Having concluded that name is bland, they engaged Vancouver market Bernie Hadley-Beauregard (who created Blasted Church and Dirty Laundry) to re brand the winery. He came up with Moon Curser, a reference to gold rush-era smugglers cursing the full moon when it stopped them sneaking over the border at night to avoid duties on their gold.

At the 2021 British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Wine  Awards they received 5 medals. At the they received 12 medals at the All Canadian Wine Championships Wow.

Mt. Boucherie Estate Winery

Located on the slope above Okanagan Lake in West Kelowna lives Mt. Boucherie Estate Winery. First started as a grape growing business in 1968, Mt. Boucherie soon became one of the largest vineyard holdings in BC, farming 200 acres of land in both the Similkameen and Okanagan Valleys.

In the last few years they have pick up momentum with new facilities a new winemaker Jeff Hundertmark. Keep your eye on this winery.

One of British Columbia's Elite wineries. Nk'Mip (pronounced ñk-meep) Cellars, North America's first aboriginal owned and operated winery, is a joint venture between the Osoyoos Indian Band and Vincor International, opened in August 2002. NK'Mip, in the Okanagan Language means "where the Creek (Wolfe Creek) meets the Lake(Lake Osoyoos)"

Under the guidance of Winemaker Randy Picton they have produced some incredible wines. Nk'Mip Qwam Qwmt Riesling Icewine 2012 received a score of 100 by wine expert John Schreiner.

They won 5 Gold, 4 Silver, 8 Bronze at the 2021 Nationals


Painted Rock

Quails Gate

Dick Stewart and his son Ben opened Quails' Gate Estate Winery in West Kelowna, in 1989. Their passion was Pinot Noir and the desire to prove red wines could flourish on the south-facing slope of Mount Boucherie, the soil been a mixture of volcanic rock and clay.

Three generations have helped to build Quails’ Gate into the award-winning winery that exists today. They build a strong reputation on their cellar of fine wines.

They were awarded 1 Platinum, 3 Gold, 8 Silver, 4 Bronze at the 2021 Nationals

Road 13 founded in 2003 has alway had the reputation for producing high quality wines. In Dec 2018 the winery was sold to  von Mandl Family collection of wineries that includes Mission Hill Family Estate, Cedar Creek Estate Winery, Martin’s Lane Winery and CheckMate Artisanal Winery. 

2021 was a very good year for the winery. They won 1 Platinum, 3 Gold, 3 Silver at the National wine awards. 2022 should be another good year for them.



Silkscarf Winery

After a long and successful career in the high-tech industry Roie Manoff his wife Ruth and their son Idan decided to follow their passion and devote their time and efforts to producing excellent wines. Tara their daughter in-law is also involved in the winery, she is responsible for the limited food service. They purchased 8.5 acres near Summerland and began their dream. The winery has a panoramic view of the blue Okanagan Lake and the spectacular Giant's Head Mountain

The wineries name is a special salute to the first pioneer pilots who used to fly in open cockpits with their 'colourful silk-scarves flowing in the wind'. The culture of both wine and silk are admired through countless generations. The vibrant Silk Scarf and its unique texture reflect the Manoff's goals in the art of winemaking - to have a signature style that is easy to recognize and to enjoy

They broke through in 2021 with their 2017 Syrah-Viognier receiving British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Wine  Platinum  Award.


SpearHead Winery

Located ten miles from Kelowna's city hall the winery sits atop of Spier Road. To reach the tasting room and gallery you must drive through the Orchards and vineyards. The winery opened in 2010 and is owned by Bill and Marina Knutson along with Bruce Hirtle/Vancouver; William Knutson/Vancouver.

In 2021 Spearhead winery under the guidance of winemaker Grant Stanley and vineyard manger Lisa Janzen wow THREE  Platinum Awards at British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Wine Awards. – 2019 Pinot Noir Saddle Block, 2019 Pinot Noir Cuveé and 2019 Pinot Noir Golden Retreat


Tantalus Vineyards

Tantalus Vineyards is situated on the eastern slopes of the Okanagan Valley overlooking the shores of Lake Okanagan and the city of Kelowna. Tantalus is dedicated to growing and vilifying limited quantities of exceptional Riesling, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Winery Proprietor Eric Savics liked the origin of the word Tantalus - to be Tantalized . The vineyard was first planted to grapes in 1927 and was called Pioneer Vineyards. Tantalus was established in 2004 on this site.  

The 2021 British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Wine of the Year Award went to Tantalus Vineyards 2018 Old Vines Riesling.


Three Sisters Winery

In 2003 John and Liz Lawrence, acquired a 15 acre property with a 7.5 acre planted vineyard. This retirement plan, although somewhat a hare-brained scheme, was based on a long family history of farming, a passion for growing and an appreciation of vineyards from around the world.  Co owners are Matthew Mikulic and Rebecca Lawrence.

It was not until 2014 that they produced their first wine and only recently came to prominence, Their 2019 Rebecca  traditional method sparkling wine made with 90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir, won British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Wine Awards

The View winery

The View Estate Winery in Kelowna produces some very good grape wines. But have you tried their Ward ciders. They are among the very best in Canada.

At the All Canadian Championships they won two medals for their grape wines including double gold for theirm2018 Pinot Noir.

Their Ward Ciders collect 6 Medals including a double Gold.

Their future looks extremely bright keep you eye on them in 2022.

Inspired by the late Harry McWatters the winery has, over the years, produced one of the best collection of wines in Canada. Lynzee Schatz is the  Winemaker.

Lynzee joined the team in 2019 and is the winemaker for TIME Winery, McWatters Collection, and Evolve Cellars The receivership 17 medals in the 20th National Wine Awards of Canada in 2021.

They also received medals at Sélections Mondiales des Vins Canada

 


Vanessa Vineyards

Vanessa is owned by two Vancouver businessmen: real estate developer Suki Sekhon and retired stock broker John Welson.

They purchased the land in 2006. The vineyard sits on a hillside above Highway 3, south of Cawston. It is almost diagonally across the highway from the Seven Stones Winery. Vanessa Vineyard's grapes are cultivated on 75 acres of sloping, well drained, rocky terrain. The vines grow in rows of rocks, absorbing the day heat and imparting that warmth during the cooler nights. Planted in a west to southwest exposure, the rocky vineyard basks in the afternoon sun. Ideally situated, the vineyard benefits from a long growing season, with low yields of intensely ripe fruit. The unique stony site produces fruit with complex flavours and minerality that are truly distinctive.

They have a major list of award winning wines.

 



Wild Goose Vineyards and Winery

Consistent quality in wine production year in year out defines Wild Goose Vineyard. It all began in early 1983 when founder Adolf Kruger purchased a barren piece of land east of Okanagan Falls. Upon his return to his newly purchased property he discovered a large flock of Canada geese feeding amongst the tumbleweeds, boulders, and rubble. As he approached, the flock of geese took flight and flew to the north.  This vision inspired Adolf to call the property Wild Goose Vineyards.

Wild Goose takes home three Platinum and one Double Platinum award at the recent Best of the Best hosted by Wine Press Northwest.  The winning entry was the 2013 Mystic River Pinot Blanc, which incidentally also won a Double Gold at the All Canadian Wine Championships and the #1 White Wine of the Competition at InterVin 2014.  Platinum awards were also given to our: 2012 Red Horizon Meritage, 2013 Pinot Gris, and 2013 Gewurztraminer.

Shrugging Doctor is a producer of wine, mead, sangria, cider, spirits and other alcoholic beverages based in Winnipeg. Founded by two 18 year old kids; Zach Isaacs and Willows Christopher in 2018
