John Skinner

Painted Rock Estate Winery

Trish and John Skinner ~ daughter Lauren

If Painted Rock is going to compete with the
best in the world, we must have confidence
in our terroir and allow it to express its
uniqueness. That’s why we are 100% estate.”
~ John Skinner

Painted Rock began with John and Trish Skinner’s belief that the Okanagan Valley had enormous, largely unrealized, potential. They wanted to build a business that would be a family legacy for their children Lauren & Riley. In pursuit of that goal, they have assembled a team who have become like family and their daughter now works alongside them.

Painted Rock is more than a winery; it is an extension of a family. The Skinner's dream of having their own vineyard was born after spending time exploring wineries in the South of France with their family.

John Skinner retired from the brokerage business dedicate himself entirely to running his Painted Rock Estate Winery near Okanagan Falls. Turned out to be a wise and wonderful decision for him, his family and wine lovers. Painted Rocks first vintage was 2007.

The Skinner's philosophy is rooted in the simple idea that wine should be made for friends and family to enjoy. With a dedication to quality and a respect for the terroir, Painted Rock ensures that each grape is of superior quality, proving that the best wines are made in the vineyard

What distinguishes Painted Rock from other wineries is as simple as the dirt. The estate property where the wines are grown is unparallelled. We have the right combination of the lake, the elevation and the rock bluffs, as well as the quality of the soil.” Lauren Skinner

I believe that our site has the perfect combination of proximity to the lake, slope, air movement, soil, heat units, sun exposure that support my contention that the finest wines in the valley can come from this sight. I am trying to do our opportunity justice, by bringing in the best talent, equipment and protocol - John Skinner

History and art surround us. Painted Rock is named for the 500+ year old indigenous pictographs that can
be found on the rock faces surrounding the vineyard. With the utmost respect for their integrity, we do
not reveal the exact locations to visitors. Instead, the Skinner Family is committed to collecting, building, and displaying art for their visitors to appreciate.

What ahead for Painted Rock? Well we are moving away from hosting weddings, 2021 will be our last year. We are going to focus on enhancing the visitor experience and continue with the picnic options we offered in 2020. John is hoping to get back on the road travelling and continue with his international goals of building the Canadian and Okanagan brand abroad. We are working with some fantastic importers in the US, UK, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, and other places. We are hitting our stride after 10 years and really enjoying this business. We are excited for the future!
