Wineries to Watch in 2013

Welcome. Every so often we sit down at the computer research a winery, taste a few wines and tell you what we have learned. In 2012 we posted our first list of Wineries to Watch. Most of those wineries have proven our predictions to be correct. Below are some of the wineries we feel qualified to be on Wines of Canada's 2013 page The winery must produce quality wines and have outstanding hospitality.

Baillie-Grohman Estate

The winery is located within a unique microclimate in Creston, BC. The winery honours the name and spirit of one of our regions most legendary pioneers, William Baillie-Grohman.

Dan Barker from New Zealand is the winemaker. The vineyards main grape is Pinot Noir. They also produce Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, as well as Schonburger and Kerner for icewine.

Blomidon Estate Winery

Blomidon Estate Winery and estate vineyards (25 acres) are located on the north shore of the Bay of Fundy nestled on the edge of the Minas Basin, near Canning, in the picturesque Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia

Watch for their Ortega icewine and award winning Rosé

Simon Rafuse is the winemaker

Cattail Creek Estate

One of Niagara-on-the-Lakes's finest wineries. Created in 2006, Cattail Creek Estate Winery is founded on over 50 years of grape growing experience. The winery is owned by Ken and Renate Dyck, Warren Dyck, Andrew and Roselyn Dyck-Cieszkowski. The winemaker is Susan Rissling.

The history of Cattail Creek Estate Winery goes back to 1956 when Opa Epp had finally saved up enough money working odd jobs to purchase a farm in Niagara on the Lake. A true farmer at heart, he saw the potential for grape vines in the Niagara Region and planted his small, ten acre farm with grapes

In 2102 their 'Reserve' Cabernet Merlot 2007 received great reviews including being mentioned on CBC's Ontario Today

Clos du Soleil

A small artisan winery and estate vineyard on the South Similkameen Valley Upper Bench, one of the newest, most exciting emerging appellations in the World. It also has one of the best winemakers Ann Sperling who has a well established reputation across Canada. Their philosophy; is simple in that we are taking a long-term approach to making consistently beautiful wine; it's all about the vineyard and the wine in the bottle

Their 2010 Vintage Red won Best of Show Award at thee Gold Metal Plates. You can expect more outstanding wines from this winery in 2013

Coffin Ridge

Located in the Georgian Hills north of Toronto, Neil and Gwen Lamont are the owners of Coffin Ridge Vineyard and Winery. Neil started by planting vines around the house as a hobby. The Baco Noir is one of the hardiest, along with Foch and Prairie Star.

With the help of consultant, Dr. Kevin Kerr of Kerr Crop Management, Coffin Ridge is growing healthy and thriving grapes which have translated into award winning wines

This is the year of perfection!

Colaneri Estate Winery

A family owned and operated winery beautifully situated on the St. David's Bench in Niagara's wine region

Designed in a Romanesque style, the building is dedicated to our parents and all our ancestors who put their heart and soul into everything they did. The building sits in the heart of the vineyard, within the lush, pulsating vines

Although one of Niagara's newer wineries it is a rising star. Winemaker is Andrzej Lipinsk whose mission is to produce the highest quality premium VQA award winning wines in the region while maintaining our heritage and traditional values with integrity to our customers.

Dirty Laundry Vineyards

Summerland's little but expanding winery I dislike the name, love the location and the wines

Look out Dirty Laundry is GOOD!

Henry of Pelham

I love the name and their wines. The family estate winery has been producing wines since 1988. They are located south of St. Catharines, Ontario. The winery's tasting room and retail store are located in an historical old stone inn, built in 1842, and offers visitors tastings, unique wine related merchandise and a complete offering of their exceptional fine wines. There is also an art gallery on the premises featuring over 300 pieces of art work by Canadian artists

The winery is owned by three brothers who established the popular brand Sibling Rivalry

Winemaker Ron Giesbrecht has won a number of awards over the years. 2013 should be a very exciting year for Henry of Pelham

Hester Creek

An established winery on the Golden Mile that was purchased by Curt Garland a short time ago. Since then the winery has zoomed forward with new planting, a new tasting room, restaurant and powerful wines.

Robert Summers, Hester Creek's winemaker has produced some mighty impressive reds including the 2009 Judge which won the prestigious BC Iconic Red tile in 2012

Jackson-Triggs Okanagan

Sources grapes from some of the most beautiful vineyards found in British Columbia, many of which have been leased from the Osoyoos Indian Band since 1998. Combined with the skilled winemaking team of Brooke Blair and Derek Kontkanen they produce incredible wines.

Okanagan Estate vineyard covers 410 acres of some of the most rugged beauty found in British Columbia. In the last few months I've tasted some outstanding wines from JT. See reviews

Karlo Estates

Located in Prince Edward County close to Lake Ontario

Award winning winemaker Richard Karlo, uses an artisanal approach to the wine making. Grapes are handpicked and wild fermented with minimal filtration. The wines are bold in style with refined complexity and minerality due to the limestone soils.

Richard makes many wine styles. Burgundian varietals include Pinot Noir and Chardonnay CHOA™ taking a new direction fermented in barrels of Cherry, Hickory, Oak and Ash. The Bordeaux offerings include Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and “Quintus”™, a classic blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec

Karlo Estates also produced the first Port style wine in Prince Edward County. The VanAlstine Red Port was chosen as one of the Top Ten Cutting Edge Wines of the World in 2010 and the VanAlstine White won a Gold medal at the international 2012 Intervin competition

La Face Cachée de la Pomme

Founded in 1994 La Face Cachée de la Pomme, situated in Hemmingford in Montérégie (South of Montreal), is an enterprise that specializes in the production of apple ice wine and exports its high-quality products to 13 countries across the globe

Driven by a passionate desire to create an authentic product of its time inspired by the bracing chill of the Québec winter, François Pouliot, a well-know film producer, participated in the development of the first ice cider in 1994.

A few vintages later, visual artist Stéphanie Beaudoin joined François, lending her vision, energy and unflagging attention to detail to the refinement of La Face Cachée de la Pomme's ice cider. Since then, this entrepreneurial couple's constant innovations have sparked a trend that has played a major part in making Québec renowned worldwide for its grand dessert wine.

The winery is one of Quebec's leading producers making over 200,000 bottles a year. La Neige is one of the worlds best known Aplle Icewines. In addition to more then eighty awards and medals, La Face Cachée received the prestigious 2007 award from Fundacion de la sidra in Spain for having contributed to the development of ice cider and launched the product in Québec and around the world.

Neige Premiere won the gold medal at the Les Prix du Public Desjardens

Little Straw Vineyards

The family-owned winery first opened in 1996 as Slamka Cellars. In 2004 it adopted the English translation of the family surname and continued to operate as Little Straw Vineyards.

Winemaker Peter Slamka's signature wine is the Tapestry; a nice blend of of five white varietals: Riesling, Auxerrois, Gewürztraminer, Siegerrebe, and Schönburger

Watch for Little Straw to make a big impression in 2013.

Mission Hill

Yes, Mission Hill. They are one of the big names in BC's Okanagan wines, but I have a feeling that 2013 will be an even greater great year for this winery.

It would take more room than we have to list all the awards this winery has won. In 2011 International Wine & Spirit Competition they were named Canadian winery of the year. InterVin International Wine Awards named them Winery of the year.

Their Riesling icewine continues to be a star in their amazing portfolio.

Moon Curser

Based in the southern Okanagan desert near Osoyoos. Moon Curser has been getting its share of awards and accolades over the last year or so. Winemaker Chris Tolley has been proving he one of BC's better winemakers. His wife Beata deserves a great deal of the created too, she trained in viticulture and oenology at Lincoln University.

They make an amazing malbec and syrah. In fact they have a cellar full of great wines.

Pentâge Winery

Located in Penticton, BC at the south end of the Naramata Bench. The winery was founded by Paul Gardner and Julie Rennie in 1996. For a while the winery flew beneath the radar screen. In the last few years their wines have been praised far and wide.
