Rosehall Run Vineyards
Rosehall Run“is one of the most exciting wineries in Prince Edward County… leading the charge for county wines and showing great examples of what can be done on the Ontario-winemaking frontier.”
The Prince Edward County of Ontario,on the opposite side
of the lake from Niagara-on-the-Lake, is now recognized as one of he premier wine producing regions of Canada. One winery leading the way is Rosehall Run, owned by
Dan and Lynn Sullivan, Cam Reston.
The land 150 acres was purchased in 2000 with the original planting in 2001 and first vintage 2004. Named for the nearby hamlet of Rosehall, Rosehall Run Vineyards is situated on prime grape growing land on Greer Road in Hillier. Currently 23 acres are planted ( Hillier clay soil on a limestone base) with
Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Ehrenfelser, Sauvignon Blanc among others
Rosehall Run has always been a working farm; in 2001 Operations were established to accommodate the needs of an efficient and utilitarian grape growing farm, and subsequently a winemaking operation. A modest barn was first constructed as a grape processing, wine production and barrel storage facility. A focus on state-of-the-art winemaking led to the design and construction of a 7,200 sq ft winery facility and barrel cellar blasted deep into the limestone foundation. Finally, in the original building a modern Tasting Room was created, offering visitors a warm and inviting space to sample Rosehall Run's critically acclaimed wines.
The design of the New Tasting Room involved the creation of a contemporary space while retaining the existing vernacular of its farming and grape growing roots. We utilized a combination of ultra eco materials such as cork, Kirei board and straw fabric veneer. A large three tiered chandelier was commissioned by local twig artist Maggie Longworth, who fashioned the light using dried grape vines from the property. The introduction of large exterior glass doors on either side allows an abundance of natural light and vineyard views throughout the space.
Dan Sullivan is the winemaker. His philosophy: winemaking starts in the vineyard . Maintain a hands-on approach to managing the vineyard staff which allows him to keep a close eye on the resulting quality of the fruit.
During the creative process of winemaking, it is not unusual for Dan to offer samples of wines in tank or barrel to Staff (and sometimes visitors) for feedback. This almost always results in a lively discussion over the blends, use of oak and tasting observations in the developing vintages
Rosehall Run's 2008 Chardonnay Cuvee County was s elected by Judge Tony Aspler for Seriously Cool Chardonnay, a prestigious group of Canadian wines featured for international wine writers and trade in both London, England and New York City.
