It all started with a passion for winemaking and the love of all things technical. I started making wine at the age of 19. I soon realized that the best wines came from the best grapes and ventured out to find this quality fruit. My quest led me to the deep south of BC to Oliver and arguably the best grape growing region of Canada. Over time, I came to develop a particular affinity for the Bordeaux red varietals and the wines being produced in a new world style. These are rich in color and texture and bold in fruit flavors.
River Stone is a small, family owned and operated winery located in the South
Okanagan. We are located on a small knoll in the middle of the valley, just south of the well recognized McIntyre Bluff and just north of Oliver, BC, the Wine Capital of Canada. It is how one would like to imagine all wineries are a quaint building surrounded by the vineyard. River Stone is owned by
Ted & Lorraine Kane
Ted is a perfectionist and a dreamer who is very good with his hands. Ted is the owner, vineyard manager, viticulturalist, winemaker, builder and dad of the establishment .
Lorraine is the co-owner, but like many wives on family farms, has a town job. Lorraine is a rural family doctor in the nearby community of Osoyoos. Fortunately for Ted, she was raised on a farm and understands much of the weather and financial concerns that are common to the industry.
Jacqueline Kemp, Jacq, as she is more widely known, is their senior winemaking consultant.
She gained her experience travelling around the world, working in West Australia, Burgundy, Canada and New Zealand.
The winery's name, River Stone, and vineyard name, River Rock Vineyards suggest that their wines come from the deep rock and gravel soils laid down following the last glacial recession . The property is located
on a small knoll in the middle of the valley, just south of the well recognized McIntyre Bluff and just north of Oliver, BC, the Wine Capital of Canada.
River Stone’s well-drained property has ideal slopes. The vineyard
is planted in the French tradition, in the proportions needed for the
winery’s red blend. The leading variety is Merlot, the foundation for
the winery’s flagship Corner Stone blend, backed up with Cabernet
Sauvignon, Malbec and Cabernet Franc.*
The winery’s elegant label, an image
of a raftsman floating downriver on
a large maple leaf, “sort of evokes the
place and our lifestyle,” Lorraine says.
The design was unusually economical because Lorraine found a website,
www.logomyway.com, for an organization
that runs label and logo competitions
open to artists around the
globe. Clients provide background on
their businesses and offer modest prize
money. The winning designer of River
Stone’s label was an artist in Brazil.*
