Bruce Nicholson
Senior Winemaker, Inniskillin Niagara

Born and raised in Ontario's leading wine region, the Niagara Peninsula, Bruce was intrigued by the winemaking industry from an early age. After studying Sciences from Ontario's Ryerson University and University of Windsor, Bruce apprenticed in winemaking in Niagara before heading out to Western Canada. Recognized for his broad skills and talent, Bruce was selected to lead Jackson-Triggs' Okanagan Winery in 1993, and has since been credited for creating its award-winning Okanagan VQA wines.

Bruce's wines are both distinctive and defined. He continues to apply his consistent dedication and career goal of staying true to the individual characteristics of the varietals while ensuring that it reaches its maximum potential. He pays attention to both the Science and the Art of winemaking, commenting, -“I enjoy working with the good acidities here in Niagara and I believe the potential is endless.” wine writer John Schreiner

Bruce as senior winemaker now oversees all winemaking activity, which includes both table wines and Icewines, after an outstanding career in the Okanagan, where he was Senior Winemaker at Jackson-Triggs Okanagan Estate in British Columbia.

He began work back in 1986 for the laboratory at the Château-Gai winery in Niagara Falls. The following year, he was transferred to Casabello, Château-Gai's sister winery in Penticton. Both wineries disappeared into the merger that produced Vincor; and when Casabello closed in 1994, Nicholson moved to the Jackson-Triggs winery. The following year he came west to BC

His career took off when the Jackson-Triggs label was launched in 1994. Named for Allan Jackson and Don Triggs, the founders of Vincor, the label was designed to showcase premium varietal wines made with vinifera grapes (except for Vidal icewine). Nicholson was the Jackson-Triggs winemaker in British Columbia

In 2006 he returned to Ontario his home as senior winemaker for Niagara-on-the-Lake's Inniskillin winery.

Nicholson emerged as an internationally respected winemaker in this decade, with a remarkable number of awards. He was named winemaker of the year last year at the big San Francisco wine competition on the strength of all the medals awarded to Jackson-Triggs wines. This year, the Jackson-Triggs 2004 Okanagan Estate Proprietor's Grand Reserve Shiraz took the top Shiraz trophy at the International Wine & Spirits Competition in London

Bruce's stellar career has seen him amass more than 1,500 trophies and medals, and with that kind of award-winning spirit, it's no wonder that a recent profile by David Lawrason in Toronto Life magazine referred to the Niagara region as “Bruce's Peninsula”!
