SUMMER IN THE SIMILKAMEEN

THE SIMILKAMEEN WINERIES ASSN. BBQ KING EVENT

Similkameen Wineries Association

In the Similkameen Valley , local is a good thing. There is a huge emphasis on eating locally and supporting local producers in this Valley. That community spirit also includes the owners of wineries who have chosen this valley for their home. Bringing the wineries together is the main task for the Similkameen Wineries Association, who organized this July 16, 2011 event.

Keremeos Griss Mill and Gardens

This event was held on the beautiful grounds of the Keremeos Grist Mill with a great turn out of people, all anxious to try the wines of this lush valley and have a taste of what the 8 Chef stations prepared. Each Chef was given a main meat item and other fresh locally sourced ingredients with an allotted time in which to create their masterpiece. Each Chef was paired to a local Similkameen winery.

The day started out rainy and gloomy with lots of folks bringing umbrella's and wearing hoodies…..not a good sign. Then when it was about to start and we had our wine glasses in hand, the sun broke through and the remainder of the day was absolutely gorgeous!

We got to savour the amazing food grown and raised in Keremeos and Cawston , Canada 's Organic Capital and enjoy fabulous wine pairings. Each Chef was paired with a winery and the pairings were all amazing. As a designated Judge, it was hard to choose the best of the best.

Chef Chris Van Hooydonk, and Chef Remington

Congratulations to the winners of the day: Chef Chris Van Hooydonk, Executive Chef of the Sonora Room at Burrowing Owl Estate Winery and Executive Chef Remington of The Hooded Merganser and Bufflehead's at Penticton 's Lakeside Resort.

Similkameen Wineries Association

This event is worthwhile attending, not only for the Chef inspired cuisine but to taste wines from at least 8 of the wineries of the Similkameen Valley – something I don't get to do very often.

Cerlia Winery

I will definitely mark this on my calendar as an annual event to attend. Well worth the price of the $75.00 admission!
