VISIT TO MOON CURSER VINEYARDS

[formerly Twisted Tree Winery]

Moon Curser Vineyards - photo by dee newman

I popped in to enjoy the sunny view from this beautiful winery that overlooks their vineyards, Lake Osoyoos and the Town…..while having a sip of their three whites that were being offered last Saturday.

The first one I had was “Afraid of The Dark 2010”, a Viognier, Roussanne and Marsanne varietal. This wine is light, dry with a floral nose of honeysuckle, grapefruit, peach and apricot, followed by hints of melon and ginger. This blend makes an ideal summer sipping wine.

Second wine was “Tempranillo 2009”. This wine is medium bodied with a nose of red cherry, violets and earthy notes of sage and mushrooms. As the wine opens up in the glass, layers of spice and tobacco leaf aromas can also be found. This wine is sourced from their own home vineyard in Osoyoos with good southwest aspect and slope. They have allocated one of the best 1-acre spots in the vineyard for these vines. Harvesting takes place at the end of September.

Lastly, and one of my favorites, “Viognier 2010”. This wine displays the delicate yet complex aromas and flavors of sweet white flowers, lemon, peach and other stone fruits, with hints of ginger in the background. The typical slight oiliness of Viognier is present, providing weight and pleasant mouth feel. A lovely summer sipping and food wine!

I was lucky to have a chance meeting with theowners, Chris & Beata Tolley, who popped in for a minute. One of the reasons they made the name change was that there are so many wineries throughout N. America with names such as ….something tree, tangled vines, etc. and they were constantly being emailed or called for requests of wines that were not of their winery. Hence the name change that is named for the gold smugglers trying to cross the Canada/US border under the cover of darkness during the gold rush days. Often the brightness of the moon would ruin their plans and they would be caught in their illegal activities. A little piece of Osoyoos history.

I encourage visitors and wine lovers to visit this winery as they have an excellent line of wines……and sadly I did not get a chance to taste more as I was driving.

Others to try are the Chardonnay 2010, Merlot 2009, Syrah 2009, Dead of Night 2009 [blend of Tannat and Syrah equally]; Border Vines 2009, a blend of Cab Sauvignon, Malbec, Carmenere, Merlot, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot and others. I will be back with my DD so that I can enjoy a flight of reds.

Thank you to for an informative and lively conversation during my visit.

Enjoy the gorgeous view while sipping Moon Curser wines!!
