Views from the Ontario Vines

Mike Weir Winery
After years of anticipation and nine years as a "virtual" winery, Mike Weir Winery has now opened in Beamsville, Ontario. The building, located on Locust Lane (between Hidden Bench Vineyards and Fielding Estate Winery) has been beautifully restored. The building was once occupied by Walters Estates and, most recently, EastDell Estates Winery.
The inside of the building has been completely gutted and is now the retail space and tasting bar. For those who remember the EastDell tasting room and restaurant, the only thing you will recognize is the location of the fireplace. The back of the building is surrounded by windows and offers fantastic views of the vineyards below and Lake Ontario in the distance. The upstairs will house a Mike Weir gallery including golfing memorabilia from his collection. The long term plan is to add a staircase down to the lower level and outside patio with space for outdoor events.
Besides the outstanding wine, the retail space offers many local Niagara products to purchase including cheeses, sauces, locally made wood products and Mike Weir apparel. At the tasting bar, you can try a variety of the Mike Weir wines for a modest tasting fee. We particularly liked the 2012 Limited Edition barrel fermented Chardonnay and 2012 Limited Edition Merlot but all the wines we tried were really good. At the end of the tasting bar, you will also notice a few taps. These are not beer taps but for serving wines by the glass from stainless steel kegs through a delivery system which completely eliminates oxidization of the wine.
For the calorie-conscious, you can purchase
at the winery. With only 70 calories, this will make a great summer sipper. Make sure to try a sample when you visit the winery.
