Congratulations to Summerhill Pyramid Winery

For the first time in history, a Canadian winery has won 'Best Bottle Fermented Sparkling Wine' from the world's most prestigious wine event, the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC)

The winner is Summerhill's Cipes Gabriel Brut N/V, a 100% certified organic pyramid-aged chardonnay from grapes grown on-site at Summerhill Pyramid Winery in Kelowna, BC.

This (award) is the fruition of my vision: to bring pride to all Canadians by producing the best sparkling wine in the world,” says Summerhill proprietor, Stephen Cipes.

This is the second consecutive year that Summerhill has been recognized by the IWSC. Last year, Summerhill was deemed 'The Canadian Wine Producer of the Year', as well as winning “Best of Category” for two of their five certified organic, pyramid-aged wines.

Cipes has been conducting a twenty-year experiment on the subtle yet profound effects of sacred geometry on liquids. His visits to Moet Chandon and it's Roman Arch Cellars prompted him to adhere to the French tradition of marrying the cuvee and the dosage in a dark sacred geometry cellar, by building “the ultimate sacred geometry chamber” for their Cipes line of sparkling wines: a four-storey precision 8% scale of Egypt's Great Pyramid.

Originally a highly successful developer from New York, in 1986 Cipes moved with his young family to the shores of Lake Okanagan, with the dream of making the world's best sparkling wine.

He is invited to accept the trophy at a black tie dinner in London on November 17th. In his acceptance speech, Cipes intends to congratulate his partner and Wine Master, Eric vonKrosigk, with whom he originally shared his passion for wine.

In the late 1980's, vonKrosigk and Cipes set out to prove that this pristine northern valley called the Okanagan was the most ideal place on the planet to grow grapes destined for world-class wines.

The Okanagan is the world's northernmost viticulture region: it's desert-like conditions of long, hot sunny days and minimal rainfall produce intensely flavored grapes, and unparalleled sparkling wine.

Summerhill's certified organic vineyard is planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier clones from Champagne, France, and Riesling vines from Germany.

The first cuvee's were made in 1990 and 1991. Summerhill's moderately-priced Cipes Brut (Riesling-based) received rave reviews in The New York Times in 1993, and has consistently won gold medals since it's introduction in 1991.

The inagural vintage of Cipes Gabriel won gold at the 2000 Chardonnay DuMonde Competition in France. Having a small Canadian winery win such a prestigious award shocked the wine world. With this latest trophy, and the string of gold medals and accolades throughout the years, the international wine community has taken note of this small organic winery from BC, Canada.

We recommend you vist this winer in Kelowna and enjoy their Sunset Organic Bistro over looking the lake while enjoying their wines

Eric von Krosigk is the winemaker.
