When the sun shines you want to escape the house, and head out into the countryside and enjoy the day. Barbara and I did just that, on July 02nd we headed into Langley Township to one of her best wineries; Blackwood Lane. As we approached the winery we stopped to take photos of a pond and a horse. Three cars passed us, all of them turned into the single lane driveway leading up the hill to the tasting room.
We quickly followed and arrived in the parking lot with no spaces available, owner and winemaker Carlos Lee came to the rescue and moved vehicles to create space on the other side of the winery. Barbara could not wait, she darted into the tasting room ahead of me.
The first tasting was a rather unique Riesling called Sea Buckthorn Riesling. Sea Buckthorn*. "This super fruit was infused into our late harvest Riesling for those who want to enjoy wine and feel good about their health." states winemaker Carlos Lee. We are planning a return to the winery this week to take a second and more prolonged tasting of this wine.
The next wine we were delighted to try was the 2012 Merlot. I really enjoyed this light body merlot, from the grapes of one of the prime vineyards in Osoyoos. The aromas are what you would expect from a fine merlot. It was quite smooth with strong fruit flavours. Coming from someone who prefers whites that is quite a compliment.
Vicuña Roja is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the Osoyoos vineyard, a fine tasting wine with nice flavours, red cherries with hints of apple and spices.
We sat at a table on the upper patio with Carlos to be joined later by Kim. As we realxed with the wine and afternoon sun a couple from Coquitlam were enjoying a picnic lunch on the lower patio, with a bottle of 2015 Rosé made from Fraser Valley grown Pinot Noir, Siegerrebe and a small amount of Madeleine Angevine. Bill and Leann would join us, adding to the wonderful ambience of an afternoon on the patio. Cabernet Sauvignon, another of Carlo's amazing wines, was tasted. This turned out to be Barbara's favourite, a few bottles made their way home with us. Watch for our review on Our Selections
This one came home with us
The signature wines of Blackwood Lane which we have tasted on previous visits are The Rebel Syrah, Alliance, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and the Reference.
There could not have been a much finer afternoon Thank you Blackwood Lane!
